Periodontics

Treatments / Periodontics

Root Surface Debridement (RSD): RSD involves the meticulous cleaning of teeth beneath the gum line. This procedure utilizes gentle and intricate instruments to dislodge and eliminate plaque and calculus deposits from tooth surfaces. RSD is typically recommended in cases where gum health does not improve with regular home care alone. The objective is to comprehensively remove the bacteria lurking deep beneath the gums, which contribute to gum disease. It’s important to note that this treatment is always performed with local anesthesia. Multiple appointments may be required to allow the gums to heal and stabilize between visits.

Gum Grafting: As gum disease advances, it can lead to gum recession, making teeth appear longer. This recession can create gaps between teeth (referred to as black triangles) and cause tooth sensitivity. Overly vigorous brushing can also contribute to gum recession. Gum grafting involves covering the exposed tooth roots with graft tissue, which can be sourced from animal or palatal tissue.

Crown Lengthening: Excessive gum tissue around the teeth can result in the appearance of short teeth or a “gummy smile.” Similarly, a high smile line can produce a similar effect. Crown lengthening is a procedure that reshapes the gum and bone surrounding your teeth, allowing for a more natural appearance and a boost in your smile confidence.

Peri-Implantitis: With the increasing popularity of dental implants, implant dentistry has advanced significantly. However, implants are susceptible to gum disease just like natural teeth. Failure to maintain daily gum and implant health can lead to gum disease around the implant, characterized by swollen gums, bone loss, and, eventually, implant failure known as peri-implantitis.

Treatment for peri-implantitis typically involves a deep cleaning of the implant and the surrounding gum tissue. In some cases, additional procedures like bone and gum grafting may be necessary to support the implant’s stability and longevity. At Excel Dental Care, we are equipped to address these dental concerns and maintain your overall oral health.
