Due to factors such as tooth decay, tooth injury, or gum disease, the nerve supply within a tooth can become infected, leading to toothaches. While this discomfort is the tooth’s way of signaling a problem, it can disrupt your daily life, making it challenging to eat and drink as you normally would.
To address this issue, it becomes necessary to clean and disinfect the root canal system to eliminate the bacteria and dead nerve tissue. This procedure is commonly referred to as root canal treatment or endodontic treatment.
How is root canal treatment conducted?
Once we ensure that the tooth is completely numb to eliminate any discomfort, we place a rubber sheet around the tooth to isolate it from the rest of the mouth. We then access the center of the tooth and use fine instruments to meticulously remove the nerve and bacteria. The tooth is thoroughly cleaned with a disinfectant solution to ensure it is completely sterile.
Once the tooth’s internal channels are properly cleaned and disinfected, we fill the root with a material called rubber percha to prevent any further contamination. Root canal fillings often have high success rates.
Alternative options to root canal treatment include extracting the tooth and considering replacement options like dentures, bridges, implants, or simply leaving the space as is.
